The Balmenach distillery is located on the River Spey in the Highlands of Scotland. The distillery produced its first single malt in 1801 however; it was not licensed as a distillery until 1824 when the owner and founder James MacGregor decided to license it. In 1922 the distillery was sold by the MacGregor family to a company that later became Distillers Company Limited and in 1993 the distillery was closed down until 1998. In 1998 it was bought by Inver House Distillers and has become one of its largest distilleries. The Distillery does not offer any kind of visitor services but interested individuals can call or email the distillery to find out more information on what single malts they offer and how they are distilled. Balmenach produces a range of malts that include fruity flavored malts to scotches that have more of a dark chocolate and nutty flavor.
